2019 President's Letter

October 2, 2019

Welcome to NIRI Silicon Valley’s 2019 – 2020 Season!

The NIRI SV Board is excited to kick off another outstanding year of activities that hope will give you all ample opportunity to learn, share your experiences with colleagues, network and have fun!

We were happy with last year’s strong turnout at our popular Spring Seminar, one of the largest IR-focused educational events on the West Coast. We also enjoyed seeing a smaller but diverse group of attendees at our well-regarded educational luncheon series, which, last year covered topics ranging from IRO career paths to targeting strategies to tools for increasing IR efficiency. In addition to these perennial programs, we hosted two Senior IRO events in August and January and coordinated a Networking Happy Hour, where members shared expertise and war stories in a relaxed environment. Finally, we conducted our second Annual Bay Area IR Compensation survey in conjunction with NIRI San Francisco, providing a valuable career benchmarking tool for Bay Area IROs.

Our membership includes many talented investor relations professionals in and around Silicon Valley - from corporate investor relations officers, to strategic investor relations counselors, to innovative vendors. Want to learn more about your fellow members? Click here for a Chapter Profile.

We are fortunate to have thriving NIRI chapters in both Silicon Valley and San Francisco and, in a nod to the fact that many NIRI members’ lives and jobs span the broader Bay Area geography, we created the Northern California Chapter several years ago to allow Bay Area NIRI members to belong to both chapters, providing more opportunities for education and networking for IROs across the entire Bay Area. Northern California chapter membership has continued to grow at a rapid clip as NIRI members make good use of both chapters’ discounted (or free) events and benefits for members. No matter where you’re based, we encourage you to take advantage of the great educational and networking opportunities most convenient to you, wherever you may be.

2019 – 2020 Calendar

A robust calendar of events is the lifeblood of our chapter and we take great pride every year in bringing you lots of high-quality opportunities for learning and networking. We think we have a great 2019-2020 season planned and we hope you’ll agree. This season we continue our focus on helping IROs “cut through the noise” to differentiate their companies, drive their messages home and build their own professional brands.

Along these lines, our first educational luncheon of the year on October 11 will highlight the partnership between IR and Corporate Communications. If you’d like to join us to hear your colleagues discuss their real life challenges and solutions, you can register here. We hope to see you there!

I loved the rich dialogue, great questions and listening to the experienced speakers.”

“The pace of the event was amazing; right to the point and so much covered in one hour!”

“Love the honesty and thoughtful answers from the panelists.”

Those are just a few of the comments we received from members on our events last season.

While we love hearing positive feedback about NIRI SV events, we also pay attention when you tell us what we can improve. To that end, while the Four Seasons Silicon Valley will remain our venue for Spring Seminar and most luncheons, we’ll also be holding several events this season at new locations around the Bay Area. Our October IR/Corporate Communications partnership luncheon will be at the Hyatt Santa Clara. And we are planning at least one “field trip” to visit the trading floor of a buy-side firm in San Francisco. We welcome your feedback on these venues and hope that diversifying the locations of our events will allow more members to join us.

We also plan to hold more of the informal networking events that members have told us they enjoy. The beauty of these informal get-togethers is that you don’t have to wait for us to plan them. If you’d like to host a BYO networking brown bag at your office for fellow members or organize a happy hour get-together at a nearby hangout, let us know and we can help get the word out to the chapter.

This year we have an unprecedented seven new board members joining us, so we’ll have lots of fresh thinking and new ideas and we plan to continue to inform, connect and inspire you in the coming year. The members of the NIRI SV Board are some of the most knowledgeable, capable and creative professionals I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. And while we work hard to bring you interesting and informative programs throughout the year, we also have a lot of fun. We know there are many more amazing professionals among our membership and we encourage you to get in touch with us. If you’re interested in sharing your expertise and ideas to help make your chapter the best it can be, either as a board member or simply as a sometime volunteer, please let us know!

We’re looking forward to a productive and fun 2019 – 2020 season and hope to see you all soon.
